BOVIY

Sat, Jan 25, 2025, 20:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
BOVIY (Vocals), BOVIY (FX), Matthias Koschnitzke (Guitar), Julius Trautvetter (Keyboards), Julius Trautvetter (Bass), Julius Trautvetter (Guitar), Burkard Ruppaner (Drums)
Vogue Germany chose Boviy as one of the most exciting newcomers of 2023 and describes her EP »The Upside Down« as a »balancing act between creative reincarnation and self-discovery, an act of liberation and declaration of war on old-fashioned role models and toxic ideals of beauty.« And that puts it in a nutshell quite well because Boviy no longer wants to be dictated to by a male-dominated music industry – and makes delightfully unorthodox pop with powerful lyrics, lush arrangements and, above all, boundless energy. Her singles and EPs already released give rise to great expectations from her debut album »When the Bubble Pops«: »The Upside Down« and »The Right Way Up« are set up as antitheses. If she is still fighting her demons on the first EP, she has fled from all of them on the second and sings freely: »I’m good all on my own!« Boviy’s songs are disarmingly honest, all stories from her own life, nothing sugar-coated, nothing left out or added, everything experienced herself, she sings without mincing her words. Incidentally, she not only writes her songs herself, but is also behind the artwork, conceptualises and edits her music videos herself and has set up her own label. However, she likes being on stage singing best!

Metaklapa

Fri, Jan 31, 2025, 19:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Metaklapa
The Wacken sensation plays their first headlining tour. Metaklapa are already a piece of Wacken history: Their first ever public appearance took them to the »Wacken Open Air« festival in 2022. It was a sensational success. The six singers from Croatia stand for high-class polyphonic a cappella singing with uniquely arranged melodies and the lyrics of one of the greatest metal bands of all time: Iron Maiden. Never before have their songs been interpreted in such an innovative and sophisticated way. The name Metaklapa says it all: Klapa is a form of Dalmatian a cappella singing that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fusion with a true world culture – the heavy metal of Iron Maiden – gives this tradition a new, international guise.

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac

Wed, Feb 19, 2025, 20:00
Laeiszhalle, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Jess Harwood (Lead vocals), James Harrison (Lead guitar), James Harrison (Vocals), Scott Poley (Guitar), Étienne Girard (Bass guitar), Sophie Worsley (Keyboards), Sophie Worsley (Lead vocals), Dave Goldberg (Keyboards), Dave Goldberg (Lead vocals), Allan Cosgrove (Drums)
In 1969, Fleetwood Mac sold more records than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. The band’s album »Rumours« from 1977 is one of the most successful albums in music history. No wonder that a huge fan base rallied around the band – and still does today! »Rumours of Fleetwood Mac« was established in 1999 to pay tribute to this unique band that shaped the zeitgeist of the 60s to the 90s. To call this band, consisting of seven musicians, a tribute band would be too short-sighted. »It’s about their music« is their tour motto, which they decided on several years ago. In this sense, they try to perform the music of Fleetwood Mac as faithfully as possible and, above all, to revive the spirit of this worldwide celebrated band and its time. The love of Fleetwood Mac’s music has been embodied by the Liverpool-based band for the past 24 years as they tour America, Canada, the UK and Europe – and even with the blessing of the original band’s co-founder and drummer, Mick Fleetwood: »An extraordinary emotive performance of Fleetwood Mac!«

Redchild

Fri, Feb 28, 2025, 20:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Redchild (Vocals)
»A cool guy with a striking raspy voice,« writes the Hamburger Abendblatt about Redchild, whose artistic range is impressive: he raps, is at international hip hop events as an MC (Master of Ceremonies) and Battle Host Moderator and mood setter, writes and produces his own songs, gives workshops – and was recently on stage in Hamburg in around 400 shows in the Broadway musical »Hamilton«. He hosts the Mo’Jams in the Mojo Club in St. Pauli, which bring together the Hamburg and German hip hop scene for spontaneous sessions with a lot of freestyle each month. Born in Berlin, Alassane Jensen aka Redchild has lived in Hamburg since his childhood and has found his form of expression here in hip hop. He says himself that he »paints pictures with language«, which he also does expertly on his debut album »Luft nach oben« (Room for Improvement). His songs are about finding his way and not giving up. Be it in German or English, freestyle on the fly or written-out songs – Redchild also eloquently makes the Elbphilharmonie a temple of hip hop!

Claudius Dreilich (Vocals), Bernd Römer (Guitar), Martin Becker (Keyboard), Daniel Bätge (Bass), Heiko Jung (Drums)
Of course, when musicians from Panta Rhei and the Horst Krüger Band came together in East Berlin in the 1970s, it was not foreseeable that this new band would one day take its place in the annals of German popular music history. On the other hand, it soon became clear that great things were being created here. And by the beginning of the 1980s at the latest - just five years after the band was founded - KARAT were one of the most important German bands – in both East and West.

Heather Nova was first heard on the radio in 1994 with her album »Oyster«. The album’s cool, catchy tracks quickly put her on the radar of indie fans and in the charts worldwide. Since then, she has recorded critically acclaimed albums and played sold-out tours. At her concert in Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle, she will present brand new material from her upcoming album as well as older »fan favourites« – a mixture of acoustic, cello-driven pieces combined with synthesizers, beats and percussion.

Alexis Ffrench

Sat, Mar 8, 2025, 19:30
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Alexis Ffrench (Piano)
He is one of the UK’s most distinctive and ground-breaking artists, founder of the »Classical Soul« genre, with over 1 billion streams in his catalogue. Klassikradio.de ranks the British pianist and composer among the top 10 artists of neoclassical music . Alexis brings the piano into the mainstream. Whether performing at King Charles III’s coronation concert in 2023 to an audience of more than 18 million, hosting his Apple Music show after Elton John’s Rocket Hour, performing at major music festivals and sold-out venues around the world, hosting music education masterclasses across the country or releasing covers of recent hits by Central Cee, Billie Eilish and others to enthusiastic audiences on social media, Alexis is passionate about making music accessible to all. The new album Classical Soul Volume One blends Alexis Ffrench’s signature soul music with classic hip-hop mixtapes and includes selections from soul anthems like »Ain’t No Sunshine« and »A Change Is Gonna Come«. The album is introspective and deals with »reconstruction«. Classical Soul Volume One was created after the tragic death of Alexis Ffrench’s father. He says: »This experience makes you think about what you have and what you have left.« So far, Alexis Ffrench has released two singles from the album: »The Way It Was« and »Reverie«. As for the upcoming album, Alexis adds: »That’s why I wanted a modern mixtape, a classic soul symphony for the 21st century. An album that attempts to reimagine the classic story – building the soaring symphonic pillars of »Black Ivy« from the echoes of soul classics into a majestic expression of pride, love, nostalgia and healing elixir.« A pioneering superstar of classic soul, Alexis’ sound refuses to be pinned down to one genre, one time period or the expectations of what kind of musician she is. Rather than being boxed into the narrow, traditional understanding of »classic«, Alexis Ffrench instead leans outwards, drawing from a diverse mosaic of influences that takes the listener by the hand and leads them on a journey through a world of possibilities. The first tracks released point to a big year of music for Alexis and we can expect some of his most soulful and purposeful tracks yet with Classical Soul Volume One.

NichtSeattle / Dino Brandão

Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Nichtseattle (Vocals), Nichtseattle (Guitar), Dino Brandão (Vocals), Dino Brandão (Guitar)
Sophie Hunger, Swiss singer-songwriter icon, curates a whole series of concerts with musical friends for a long weekend at the Elbphilharmonie. On the opening evening of the »Reflektor« festival, two singers with great storytelling talent perform one after the other: the Swiss Dino Brandão, who has already shared the Elbphilharmonie stage with Sophie Hunger and Faber, and the Berlin-based Nichtseattle, whose artist name is inspired by the German band Tocotronic. Katharina Kollmann, alias Nichtseattle, got her name from the Tocotronic song »Wir sind hier nicht in Seattle, Dirk«. In 2022, she toured with the same legendary band from the »Hamburger Schule«. Her own songs are no less impressive: on her third album »Haus«, released in 2024, she sings laconically and poetically, but also seriously and full of irony about the big and small stories of life as an East Berlin resident. »A lyrical epic of voices, guitars and a little percussion,« says Rolling Stone magazine – she can be experienced at the Elbphilharmonie with a solo programme that condenses this epic. Dino Brandão dreamed of a career as a skateboarder, but was thwarted by several injuries. He then began his musical career as a street musician, celebrated success with the band Frank Power and released his first solo album »Self-Inclusion« in spring 2024. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung is enthusiastic: »His songs are bittersweet, the lyrics lyrically profound, the music pulsating, danceable, hopeful. A symbiosis of opposites.«

Sophie Hunger / Metropole Orkest / Jochen Neuffer

Thu, Mar 20, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Metropole Orkest, Sophie Hunger (Vocals), Jochen Neuffer (Conductor)
»The result is astonishing, surprising, often absolutely stunning,« wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung about concerts featuring Sophie Hunger and the orchestra from her home city of Bern. Now the Swiss singer-songwriter icon celebrates the start of her »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie with symphonic arrangements of her best songs, this time accompanied by the Metropole Orkest, one of the best pop orchestras in the world. With this major concert event, Sophie Hunger joins the ranks of Shirley Bassey, Ella Fitzgerald, Laura Mvula, Snarky Puppy and many other musical greats. They all performed with the Metropole Orkest, which earned them 21 Grammy nominations and 4 Grammy awards. It is not only the large line-up with integrated big band that makes the Metropole Orkest from Hilversum unique, but also its decades of specialisation in large-scale popular music. The orchestra is conducted by Jochen Neuffer, who arranged Sophie Hunger’s songs for the symphonic line-up. Numerous projects of this kind have already seen him join forces with pop and jazz greats such as Gregory Porter, Lalah Hathaway, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Robbie Williams, Donny McCaslin, Jacob Collier and Mark Guiliana.

La Force

Fri, Mar 21, 2025, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
La Force (Vocals)
»I love immersing myself in a feeling and letting it drive me,« says singer-songwriter Ariel Engle, who travels to Hamburg in March with her solo project La Force as part of Sophie Hunger’s »Reflektor« festival. The Canadian became known as a member of the music collective Broken Social Club, which has produced artists such as Feist. For her album »XO Skeleton«, Engle took two years during the Covid pandemic to give free rein to her feelings – the result is a very intimate album that revolves around life, love and death. Engle thematises the loss of a person, unrequited love and memories from her own childhood. Despite (or perhaps because of?) this, the music celebrates life in all its facets: with her unique, warm voice, the singer provides comfort and confidence. Like the lyrics, the music oscillates between sorrow and lightness in a fine blend of folk, synth-pop and R&B.

Sophie Hunger: Walzer für Niemand

Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 18:00
Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal (Hamburg)
Sophie Hunger (Reading), Sophie Hunger (Vocals), Sophie Hunger (Guitar)
»Walzer für Niemand« (Waltz for Nobody): that’s the name of a song by Sophie Hunger, released in 2008 on her debut album »Monday’s Ghost«. And it is also the name of her first novel, which will be published in spring 2025. The coming-of-age story, which is as unfathomable as it is poetic, tragicomic and sophisticated, tells of what we have to lose in order to become something. As part of her »Reflektor« festival at the Elbphilharmonie, Sophie Hunger will read from her book and sing some of her songs, accompanied only by herself on the guitar. The novel tells the story of a girl and her best friend Niemand. Their upbringing is characterised by constant changes of location. Carried by the rhythm of music, they experience the magic and shocks of childhood and adolescence. They are happiest when they lose themselves in their record collection or find the phrases in songs that have always lurked inside them. They hide in the music and are hidden by it, but they always have each other. But then the friendship cracks and a catastrophe is in the offing.

Soap&Skin

Sun, Mar 23, 2025, 20:00
Elbphilharmonie, Großer Saal (Hamburg)
Soap&Skin (Vocals)
The career of Soap&Skin alias Anja Plaschg began as a child prodigy of melancholic, dark songwriting. The Austrian has now released three albums and numerous compositions for theatre and film and is also a successful actress – most recently in the multi-award-winning film »Des Teufels Bad«, for which she also wrote the soundtrack. In addition to her own songs, she also delights audiences with impressive new interpretations of cover songs. With »TORSO«, an entire cover album with songs by David Bowie, Tom Waits, The Doors and the »Lifetime Version« of a French hit will be released in November 2024. »Voyage Voyage« by Desireless from 1989 is a perfect example of Soap&Skin’s art: she has been singing the song for many years, letting it grow and changing her interpretation again and again. This »Lifetime Version« may well be the sum of her work to date, but it is certainly not the end of the story. She can escape herself with the songs of other artists, says Anja Plaschg, »it can be both marvelous and frightening to enter those rooms, to open those fully furnished places of other souls, study every component, see what it does - change a spot or an angle, put words from strangers into one’s mouth, tell my story within the shape of others.«

Wherever classical and electronic music meet, the Icelander Valgeir Sigurðsson is not far away. In the ProArte X series, he joins forces with Belgian theatre maker and countertenor Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe and violinist Elisabeth Klinck to form an unconventional trio. Together they explore the fluid transitions between spherical soundscapes, as only Sigurðsson knows how to create them, and the classical sounds of voice and violin. The desire to experiment and the wish to create an atmospheric antithesis to the torn present can be heard in every note of her »Isabelle Lewis« project: close your eyes, open your ears and go with the flow of sound.
